The Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris website functions as an essential platform, providing comprehensive information on marine plastic issues impacting the ASEAN+3 region. This encompasses regulatory frameworks, stakeholder networks, ongoing initiatives, best practices, innovative approaches and scientific knowledge. Our website is the go-to source for data and information related to marine plastics in the ASEAN+3 region. The materials available here are updated regularly through a continuous process of science-based information gathering and curation. Spanning many sectors and areas of society, we facilitate collaboration and help find effective solutions to marine plastic pollution.

ERIA's Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris - 2025

Marine plastics pollution is one of the most urgent environmental challenges of the 21st century. Tackling this problem means rethinking how plastics are produced, used and disposed of. From upstream to downstream, turning the tide on plastic pollution will require an all-hands-on-deck approach, involving producers, governments and consumers. Supporting this transition is the Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris. Established under the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) in 2019, the Knowledge Centre’s mission is to provide information and support to ASEAN+3 Member States, thereby helping them to improve the circularity of plastic and prevent leakage into marine environments. Our activities include the following: 1. Supporting research and data collection that contributes to science-based policy formulation. 2. Gathering and sharing scientific knowledge to support solution-orientated initiatives and build public awareness. 3. Facilitating national and regional capacity-building activities. 4. Developing strong collaborative networks and regional partnerships. 5. Promoting innovations from the private sector

Behavioural Insights for Single-Use Plastic Usage Reduction

In 2023, ERIA's Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) launched a project to explore how behavioral insights can help reduce single-use plastic in ASEAN cities and communities. The project focused on creating practical knowledge and developing a toolkit for local governments, businesses, and schools. This infographic highlights the results and key learnings from the pilot project implementation.
