Myanmar’s Bottom-up Circular Economy: Challenges and Opportunities in REUSE and REPAIR

Myanmar’s waste generation is among the lowest globally, with 0.37 kg/capita/day of general waste and 0.04 kg/capita/day of plastic waste. Compared to its ASEAN neighbors, Myanmar operates a more resource-efficient economy with minimal plastic production and consumption. However, downstream waste management remains a significant challenge. While informal recycling is efficient, waste infrastructure is underdeveloped in urban areas and nearly absent in rural regions, leading to substantial plastic leakage.

A key question is how an economy functions with such low plastic consumption. To explore this, ERIA's Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris, in collaboration with Thant Myanmar, is organising our 10th Private Sector Initiatiave seminar: Myanmar’s Bottom-up Circular Economy: Challenges and Opportunities in REUSE and REPAIR

Bringing together private sector innovators and organizations supporting economic transition, this seminar aims to highlight Myanmar’s thriving circular economy, its closed-loop localised supply chains, and resource-efficient practices, while also exploring how the principles of Reuse and Repair can help address challenges in downstream waste management and further advance sustainable solutions.
