Lao Kayama: Transparent and Accountable Management of Plastic Waste in Laos

20 Mar 2024

Recognising the growing waste challenges in Laos during a period of rapid economic growth, Lao Kayama Sole Co, Ltd initiated efforts to improve waste management. Its focus was not solely on disposal but also on transforming waste into a valuable asset for the country.

To achieve this vision, Lao Kayama strategically collaborated with local institutions – the Environmental Management Academic Centre of the University of Laos and Savan EMC Co, Ltd – embracing local expertise to address the specific waste management challenges faced by Laos.

The result was the creation of the WASTE MANIFEST system, empowering industries and hospitals to responsibly manage their waste, while ensuring transparency and accountability in waste disposal practices.

The company's emphasis remains on providing safe services while building the capacity to meet international standards. This includes waste and hazard removal, disposal services for factories and hospitals, and a commitment to environmentally friendly practices to support customer needs. Recognising the difficulty in managing medical and industrial waste, especially hazardous waste, Lao Kayama introduced the Japanese waste management system and cutting-edge technologies with the establishment of efficient sorting, transportation, and waste management, including incineration.

Lao Kayama's dedication extends beyond hazardous waste. With over 60 years of waste disposal service experience and more than five years of waste management projects in Laos, Lao Kayama has leveraged its expertise for waste management and disposal services. The goal is to create a clean environment, reduce environmental impacts, increase recycling percentages, and decrease waste in factories, leading to cost reductions.

It acknowledges the potential of plastic as a resource, not a pollutant. By separating and crushing plastic waste, it created refuse-derived fuel for cement factories, promoting a circular economy where waste is a valuable input for another industry.

The company received support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency in 2018 for a hazardous waste elimination pilot project in Vientiane. In 2019, a hazardous waste incinerator was installed in the main 32 landfill in Vientiane. This marked significant progress toward sustainable waste removal in Laos.

Looking ahead, Lao Kayama Sole Co, Ltd is committed to contributing to a sustainable and environmentally friendly future for Laos.
