Kuala Lumpur, 15–16 January 2025 – A delegation from the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) participated in the 3rd Technical Seminar of Unwaste: Waste Trafficking and Circular Economy, organised by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and co-organised by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Mr Fusanori Iwasaki, Research Fellow at ERIA, delivered presentations on both days of the seminar.
On 15 January, Mr Iwasaki spoke at Session 3: Panel Discussion on Green Trade, Circular Economy, and Waste Trafficking, where he discussed the classification of waste management activities, highlighting distinctions between formal and informal, legal and illegal, and regulated and unregulated practices.
On 16 January, he contributed to Session 2: Presentations and Discussion – Examples of Good Practices, Success Stories, and Challenges, where he outlined best practices and challenges in waste management across ASEAN. His presentation covered Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes, as well as supporting guidelines and product standards that facilitate EPR implementation.
