The Save Our Ocean project by BruWILD utilises many approaches to look into marine-related challenges, including reducing marine debris, protecting sea turtles, climate change mitigation and pollution from plastic waste. This is accomplished through joint projects, educational campaigns, and partnerships with local NGOs, public agencies and private businesses. The project also encourages the usage of reusables or products made of recycled plastic.
During the World Ocean Day 2019, BruWILD also created its first short documentary, entitled “Tiny Heroes of Our Sea”, in collaboration with a group of marine conservationists from Our Seas Our Legacy, supported by Seastainable Co and DHI Water & Environment Pte Ltd.
The project also puts a lot of emphasis on educating the general public on the lasting damages caused by plastic waste on the marine ecosystem. Behavioral changes such as sustainable consumption and the reduction of single-use plastic usage such as takeout boxes and cutlery is also encouraged.
Implementing partners: Our Seas Our Legacy, DHI Water & Environment (S) Pte Ltd and Seastainable Co
The Eco-Edu Program is an extra-curricular initiative to educate students from the lower primary to the pre-university level. Under this programme, the students were involved in a number of activities. These included visual presentations, guided nature trips and group activities, both indoor and outdoor. The materials presented were in-line with the Ministry of Education’s national curriculum. The activities were also meant to help the students gain better understanding of environmental issues as well as exposure on the country’s natural biodiversity.
Little Eco Pahlawan
BruWILD introduced the Little Eco Pahlawan Project in 2019. As part of this initiative, school children participated in eight two-hour activities covering four themes related to habitat protection and biodiversity conservation over the course of a year. An entertaining and educational introduction to the country’s biological habitats was given during these sessions. Children who finished their tasks would receive a Little Eco Pahlawan lapel badge or title. This project involved forming a tight cooperation and collaboration with the school leaders and teachers.
Junior XPlorers
This activity entails a one-hour guided nature walk in several of the recreational forests in the country. One example was the Tasek Lama Rercreational Park situated within the capital city.
Implementation duration: 1-2 hours per activity
Implementing partner: Ministry of Education
