Green Brunei has held several river clean-up events over the years. The first event was organised on 21 October 2023 at one of the villages in Kampong Ayer (Water Village) in the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. The activity was concentrated at Kampong Sungai Siamas, located at the East side of the Water Village by the Brunei River bank. It was part of the European Union’s Green Diplomacy Weeks, where officials of the EU Member States around the world arranged events to encourage discussions and cooperation on climate change.
The river clean-up attracted 112 youth volunteers from universities, government organisations and the general public. The participants managed to collect over 1,356.5 kg of trash during the three-hour event.
The latest river clean-up by the NGO was run on 23 June 2024, in partnership with the Brunei Darussalam Central Bank (BDCB). The event was organised in conjunction with the World Environment Day, aimed at encouraging the financial sector to contribute to the national sustainability agendas. It was also to increase awareness on environmental issues and to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 14 – Life Below Water and SDG 15 – Life on Land.
The event gathered 150 individuals from the central bank, 13 financial institutions as well as community members. A total of 685 kg of waste was collected during the event.
The first event which was a collaborative effort with Brunei LNG, was organised on 17 March 2023. The clean-up took place at the Jalan Pengasing Beach in the Tutong District, about 50 km from Bandar Seri Begawan. The event was hoped to encourage proper waste disposal and environmental guardianship.
Around 100 volunteers, including pre-university students and youth members successfully gathered about 418 kg of trash during the clean-up event.
Green Brunei has also worked together with another major player in the Brunei Darussalam economy, Hengyi Industries. The clean-up effort was held on 20 September 2023 at one of the country’s popular beaches, Serasa Beach. The main objective of the collaborative effort was to raise awareness on the importance of plastic pollution and responsible waste disposal.
