Mother Earth Foundation has been working as a partner of the Malabon City local government covering 5 partner barangays since 2013.

Activities under the partnership with GIZ and Geocycle included:

● Awareness raising and capacity development on ESWM for community members and officers

● Marine litter baseline study

● Capacity development on ESWM, including waste monitoring, at the LGU level

● Establishment, upgrading, and operationalization of infrastructure and equipment for waste collection and management

● Review and enhancement/updating of local ESWM plans

● Conduct of stakeholder dialogues (local and national levels)

● Baseline data gathering (including TNA) on Malabon informal waste workers

● Organization and formalization of informal waste workers through provision of social protection (occupational safety, health insurance, etc.)

Waste Assessment and Brand Audits (WABA)

A brand audit is a participatory science initiative that involves counting and documenting the brands found on plastic waste to help identify the corporations responsible for plastic pollution.

The foundational brand audit methodology was designed by the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA), Mother Earth Foundation, Citizen consumer and civic Action Group (CAG), and Greenpeace Philippines. These pioneering groups collaborated in 2017 to organize the first large-scale brand audit on Freedom Island in the Philippines. This initiative is done as part of #BreakFreeFromPlastic initiatives.

Zero Waste Cities

This program provides various trainings and services, such as the Zero Waste Management Program, particularly the improvement of the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF).  Services include 10-year solid waste management plan development, training on ecological solid waste management, materials recovery facility construction and operations, waste collection system development and implementation, community information and education campaigns, etc.

Mother Earth Foundation is a member of the EcoWaste Coalition, which creates or joins in public campaigns on plastic pollution and marine plastic, as well as campaigns of its member organizations that involve hazardous chemicals, such as mercury waste. Sometimes this involves calling out private sector initiatives as “greenwashing.”
