Ghost Gear Prevention

Nissui is proactively addressing marine plastic pollution through multiple initiatives. They have joined the Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI) to combat ocean pollution from abandoned fishing gear, enhancing their fishing gear management with regular inspections, maintenance records, and proper disposal protocols. Annual employee education on marine plastics is also conducted. Nissui is working to eliminate polystyrene foam floats in aquaculture by 2024, replacing them with environmentally friendly options to prevent plastic outflow into oceans.

Collaborating with Sealord and Motueka Nets, Nissui recycles old fishing nets, transforming them into new products. They also support the Albatross Project by Pirika Inc., which focuses on studying and reducing plastic flow into marine environments. Through the "ONE FOR OCEAN" project, Nissui partners with Yamaguchi Prefecture and TerraCycle Japan to upcycle marine plastic litter, converting it into valuable materials.

Nissui's initiatives highlight their commitment to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. By focusing on reducing marine plastic pollution and enhancing the sustainability of their operations, Nissui aims to mitigate the adverse impacts of plastic waste on ocean ecosystems. Their comprehensive approach includes modifying aquaculture equipment, recycling fishing nets, and supporting projects that address the broader issue of marine plastic pollution. This multi-faceted strategy underscores Nissui's dedication to preserving marine environments for future generations.
