Brunei's Journey to Plastic Sustainability: Hands-on Initiatives in Action

In 2019, the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) established the Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris to provide the ASEAN+3 Member States with support in addressing emerging challenges associated with marine plastic debris.

As one of the Knowledge Centre's mandates is to promote business practices which contribute to the reduction of plastic waste in the region, we have been organising a series of online and hybrid seminars to promote and encourage such positive business trends. Our next hybrid event, scheduled for June 20, 2024, will take place in Brunei Darussalam.

At this occasion, ERIA with the support of GIZ 3RproMar and in collaboration with The Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe), Ministry of Development of Brunei Darussalam, will highlight the country’s journey in promoting plastic circularity, intervening at different stages of the plastic life cycle.

Guided by the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (or 3R) for solid waste management, the country has seen progress in changing the way people consume plastics, and the private sector has played an important role in this social shift. This webinar will highlight different ways private companies are contributing to reducing plastic waste, and underline the initiatives implemented by government authorities and non-profit entities in plastic waste management and the circular economy in general.

Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris will also reintroduce its online Private Sector Platform (PSP) to the stakeholders in Brunei Darussalam, particularly to the private companies, to raise more awareness of the platform and attract a larger number of private companies to join the fight against marine plastics.
