ERIA Reinforces Support to Combat ASEAN Plastic Pollution at 11th AWGCW Meeting

South Tangerang, 12 May 2026: ERIA’s Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris participated in the Open Session of the 11th Meeting of the ASEAN Working Group on Chemicals and Waste (AWGCW). This meeting was hosted in Indonesia and chaired by Malaysia. 

Mr Reo Kawamura, Director for the Regional Knowledge Centre, showcased ERIA’s recent accomplishments in supporting ASEAN’s efforts to combat plastic pollution. Key highlights included: 

  • Co-hosting the ASEAN Conference on Combatting Plastic Pollution (ACCPP) 

  • Implementing behavioural change-related projects 

  • Developing the forthcoming handbook, Plastic Pollution Countermeasures: Effective Global Actions and Case Studies from East Asia 

  • Implementing three major projects, namely (1) EPR Consumer Survey in ASEAN, (2) Community-Based Waste Management: Good Practices from Indonesia, and (3) E-Waste and Sound International Resource Circulation in ASEAN 

These activities involve collaboration with other AWGCW participating institutes, such as the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Basel and Stockholm Conventions Regional Centre for Southeast Asia (BSCRC-SEA), the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) Indonesia, and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).
