TONTOTON, a certified project under the Ocean-Bound Plastic standard and verified by a third-party body, is addressing plastic leakage in Cambodia’s most polluted coastal areas. By empowering local communities and independent waste collectors, TONTOTON aims to create a circular economy that prevents ocean plastic pollution. Through its holistic collection approach, the organization collects all types of post-consumer mismanaged plastic, cleans them, and ensures that every type of plastic holds value, enabling collectors to benefit from all the plastic they gather. This approach reflects TONTOTON’s commitment to "Leaving Nothing and No One Behind."
At TONTOTON’s Material Recovery Facility in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, collected plastic is sorted into three categories: recyclable plastics (e.g., PET bottles), hard-to-recycle plastics, and non-recyclable plastics. Recyclable PET plastics are processed by recyclers, while hard-to-recycle plastics are reprocessed at TONTOTON's facility into valuable products such as plastic panels, building materials, furniture, and souvenirs. Non-recyclable plastics are treated at a co-processing plant, where they are converted into energy.
As Cambodia’s first initiative of its kind, TONTOTON is driving environmental sustainability and enhancing living conditions by adopting a fully circular approach to waste management, making a tangible impact on local communities.
